As the Internet generation, we are still enduring the pain of "network delay". We can't bear it! Today, let's talk about "How to improve the speed of your home network." It aims to make the average computer novice understand it.
Why is my internet connection so slow?
In theory, the download speed of 100M broadband can only reach 12.5MB/s at the highest, but it is normal at around 10MB/s. Watching a 90-minute ultra-clear movie online at this speed will never get you stuck. But why is the 200M broadband installed in my home, even when watching a small high-definition video, stuck as a dog?
1. The bandwidth is not full.
It's all because the bandwidth is not full! You can use software to test the speed to see if your internet speed does not match the bandwidth.
-Sugar Master took a test of the internet speed in the office.
The most common reason why the bandwidth is not full is that the network equipment is not configured enough. For example, the "gigabit home LAN" that many people often say is not just a 1000-megabit optical fiber.
A good horse and a good saddle must all meet the Gigabit standard, including optical cats, routers, network cables, and switches.
2. "Fake 100M broadband":
If you have the most expensive network package, the WiFi signal is full, and the network speed is still as slow as a snail, then there is another possibility: your home improvement is "fake 100M broadband"
Some secondary operators will start with China Unicom and Telecom Broadband and then resell them. If only 100M of broadband is installed for one household, there is no problem, and the network speed is as fast as before. However, some black-hearted merchants sell 100M broadband to 10 users at a low price, and 10 people grab 100M network speed naturally!
How can I increase the speed of my home WiFi?
If it is determined that the terminal device is slowing down the bandwidth, we can start troubleshooting one by one:
1. Router:
The speed of the network mainly depends on the router. Wireless routers typically have transmission frequency bands of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and the unit is GHz.The 5G frequency band has a short wavelength, weak wall penetration ability, and is rarely interfered with by other devices, so the network speed is faster within a certain range; the 2.4G frequency band has a long wavelength, strong wall penetration ability, and a wide radiation range, but is prone to interference.
The traditional 2.4G single-band router is blocked like the morning rush hour, which basically means it cannot meet the network needs of modern families. Therefore, it is recommended that you replace the dual-band gigabit router that supports both 2.4G and 5G signals, and immediately experience the thrill of the fast train.

Ideally, the router should be placed in the center of the home, with no obstructions around it, as shown on the left side of the image above. However, most families will choose to put them in the weak current box at the entrance, so there will inevitably be some areas that cannot be covered by the network.
In addition, the router antenna points to the direction of the most commonly used network, and one can be horizontal and one vertical, so that the coverage area will be slightly larger.
2. Ethernet cable:
If the network speed is still slow at this time, you can check whether it is a problem with the network cable. At present, the most commonly used network cable types are: Category 5e cable "CAT5E", Category 6 cable "CAT6", and Category 6e cable "CAT6A".
Category 5 cable is inexpensive, easy to connect, and can reach Gigabit speeds; however, its anti-interference ability is limited, so it is typically used in 100Mb/s networks; Category 6 cable is slightly more expensive, more complicated to wire, and has strong anti-interference ability.Applied to gigabit networks, the transmission performance is much higher than the standard of Cat5e network cable.
The appearance of the network cable will be marked with the words "CAT5E" or "CAT6". You can check it yourself. If your network cable is still Category 5e, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade to Category 6 or above.
In terms of network cable arrangement, Sugar Master recommends that at least one network cable be left in each room. Devices such as desktop computers and printers must be connected to a separate network cable. After all, compared with WiFi, connecting directly to the network cable will be more stable, so don't use WiFi where the network cable can be used.
3. Wireless AP, or signal amplifier, or wall penetration king:
There is also a very common situation: the room where the router is placed in the home has a good signal, while other rooms have basically no signal.
In this case, consider installing a wireless AP. A wireless AP is a wireless switch, and our mobile phone hotspot relies on the AP function. Its function is that when the signal of the wireless router cannot completely cover all areas, it can be connected to the router to share the IP, so as to realize network sharing, and the signal is full. Not a dream!
Nowadays, there are many types of APs, including ceiling-mounted APs, panel-type APs, socket-type APs, etc. Both panel-type and socket-type APs can be installed after the decoration is completed.
4. AC Control Unit:
After talking about AP, let's talk about AC. The AC controller, the wireless access controller, can manage wireless APs in a unified manner and perform unified configuration, modification, and management of all APs.
5. White cat:
Optical modems are the "optical modems" that are required for fiber-to-the-home use. They are all provided by operators, and they usually do not go wrong.
The light cat has its own routing function, and many friends use it directly as a router, but this is actually not very good. Not to mention the unstable performance, and you can't connect too many devices. Sugar Master doesn't recommend this for everyone.
6. A gigabit switch:
If you want several devices in your home to be connected to the network through network cables, you need to use a switch at this time, which is equivalent to dividing a network cable into multiple roots to connect different devices. Many people can't tell the difference between a switch and a router, thinking that a switch is an "upgraded router" with more LAN ports.
In fact, this is not the case. The router has the function of accessing the network, but the switch does not. Therefore, a router must be installed in front of the switch.
7. NAS:
NAS is network storage, and its function is to realize home network data sharing. With it, you can share data with your family, watch movies at the same time, and automatically back up, which is equivalent to a family cloud, and you no longer have to worry about running out of computer hard drives.
Hard installation
In addition to the above network equipment, we also have some things to pay attention to in the decoration and hardware installation. For example, most network equipment will be placed in the weak current box, so choose a good quality weak current box, and the panel should preferably be made of ABS material, which can reduce the interference to the wireless router signal.
The weak current in the strong and weak circuit is the network cable. The anti-interference ability of the network cable is weak, and it is very susceptible to strong electricity or radiation interference, such as microwave ovens.
The network cable must be installed in a single tube and a single wire during the hydropower transformation. The strong and weak currents must be kept at a certain distance, and the intersections should be covered with tin foil to avoid the interference of the strong currents on the weak currents.
How to set up a Gigabit home network
Seeing this, some people will definitely think, "The home is 100M and it's enough now. You don't need to spend money to buy a gigabit." Sugar owners think that when decorating the house now, we must take into account the network environment and smart home in the next 10 years. The development trend of gigabit LAN is definitely a necessity for future families.
For the Internet generation, a complete, practical, and efficient home network system is really very important! This is to teach you a set of more generally applicable construction methods:
1. Plan for small and medium-sized apartment buildings:
For small and medium-sized apartments, it is not necessary to build a gigabit LAN, as long as the abovementioned lets the terminal equipment keep up with the rhythm of the bandwidth, so that the existing bandwidth can be fully used. There is no need for switches, APs, and other equipment, and at most one router is needed.
2. Large-scale construction plan:
For friends with a larger house area, the sugar owner still highly recommends going directly to Gigabit. The logic is also relatively simple: each room has one network cable, all non-portable devices are also connected to a separate network cable, and then at least two wireless routers, or directly connect to the wireless AP.
3. The duplex villa's construction plan:
For luxury villas, you can purchase an enterprise-level AC+AP package (such as H3C, Cisco, etc.), but it requires professional technicians to debug and install, and then install a wireless AP on each floor. Pay special attention to the need to install a gigabit switch for large apartments and villas, and N LAN ports can meet more needs.
Any good network equipment brands to recommend?
Network equipment is absolutely worth every penny. The sugar owner also followed the sales recommendations of strong owners and bought several entry-level models of Mercury, TP-LINK, and Tenda. Of course, it was also because they were cheap, but the result was... an internet speed card to burst!
Therefore, the sugar owner's personal suggestion is to buy the best one within the budget based on the size of the broadband and the size of the apartment. For example, ASUS, NETGEAR, and the more expensive H3C and Huawei are all brands with a good reputation.
But there is no need for "excessive medical treatment". Generally, it is enough to buy a household type. A lot of enterprise-level equipment is really a waste for ordinary families, unless your home is a luxury villa with parties every day.
