Google Chrome opens slowly – how to fix

We all have our favorite browsers, and we all have misconceptions about our peers. You've probably heard a lot of people complaining about Google Chrome, claiming that it becomes sluggish after a while. They may not realize that most other browsers experience slowness at some point.

You should try to fix this before telling your friends they're right and your Google Chrome actually starts dragging. No doubt, similar issues can occur with any browser of your choice. Instead of switching between browsers, try fixing your favorite browser. If you're trying to open Chrome just to experience some slow performance, you're not alone.

Fixing Chrome's slow startup can go a long way towards speeding up Chrome and making your browsing experience better. Here's how to fix Google Chrome opening slowly.

Common causes of slow browser opening

One of the most common browser problems usually starts when the browser takes a long time to load. Now, you can blame Windows for this; after all, it's a rather buggy OS, and in this case, an OS reinstall is required. But what does it matter if everything works or is perfectly fine on your OS? Well, you're definitely not reinstalling the whole system because Chrome is running, are you?

of course not. But you also shouldn't jump ship and join another browser team. Why? As mentioned, this can also happen on Firefox, Opera, or even Safari.

This is a rather annoying problem. You may even have gotten into the habit of loading up your PC, clicking the Chrome icon, heading to the kitchen to make coffee, and returning to your semi-working browser. You don't want to support this habit, that's for sure.

Some users even report that the browser takes 15 minutes to load. Now, this is simply outrageous!

The root cause here is not singular. It is likely that a number of issues are causing Chrome to load slowly. Here's how to fix this problem.

Restart the router

It sounds like something a tech support officer would say, but they always mention it for good reason - it happens more often than you might think. Whatever the problem with an application that uses the internet, your first solution should be to restart your router.

  1. If your router has a dedicated on/off button, press it.
  2. Then, unplug all cables (including the power adapter). Let it sit for about five minutes.
  3. Now, reconnect everything and see if Chrome loads faster. Most likely, this won't solve the problem, but it will save you some unnecessary headaches.

reset network adapter

Similar to a router, there may be a problem with your network adapter. For this, you will have to use the command prompt.

  1. Open the start menu, type Command Prompt , and select Run as administrator .
  2. Now, type netsh winsock reset and hit Enter .
  3. Reboot your system and see if this fixes your problem.

Disable extensions

One of the culprits of Chrome's slow startup is Chrome's extensions. While they are the pride and joy of browsers, some may disagree with your PC. That's why a simple reinstall won't help; Chrome allows you to use your Google account for quick setup. When you log in, it automatically loads all your extensions and settings.

  1. Open Chrome and click the menu icon in the corner.
  2. Choose More tools > Extensions .
  3. Next, click the toggle next to the extensions to disable them.
  4. Now, close everything, restart your computer and try running Chrome. If it loads quickly, one or more of your extensions are taking too long to load.

Turn off hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration does sound like it could help things happen faster. This feature helps your PC perform certain hardware operations as efficiently as possible. However, sometimes it tries to run hardware operations more efficiently than it could. This often results in slow startup issues that are common in many programs, including Chrome.

Many programs use hardware acceleration, even video games, so if the application in question takes too long to load, you can always try turning it off.

  1. For Chrome, open the browser and click Customize and control Google Chrome (three dots in the upper right corner of the browser).
  2. From the drop-down list, select Settings .
  3. Now, click on Advanced > System , which is on the left side of the screen.
  4. Then, click the toggle Switch Use hardware acceleration when available to turn off. Relaunch will appear. Click it to close Chrome, restart it automatically, and see if the slow loading problem persists.

Rename default folder

As mentioned, reinstalling the Chrome app won't help you. When you reinstall Chrome and log into your Google account, it will automatically load all your settings and extensions. However, when syncing your account, you can choose which settings/extensions to import.

Make your profile everything yours located in a folder on the computer you're currently using. Every time you sync your Chrome account on a different laptop, Chrome will download the same folder to the device. To try and speed up the Chrome loading process on a specific device, you should try creating a new folder. This is Default and it's in your Google Chrome directory.

  1. Open File Explorer, type C:Users[Username]AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser Data and hit Enter . To automatically navigate to the relevant folder, open Run and paste this into the address bar: %LocalAppData%GoogleChromeUser Data .
  2. Now, find the default folder and rename it to, for example, Backup default . Try running Google Chrome and see if that fixes the problem.

Google Chrome loading problem

There are a number of potential reasons why your Chrome might be loading very slowly. At least one of the solutions mentioned should work. However, if not, make sure you contact Google Chrome Support and tell them your problem. They should help you troubleshoot and help you keep using your favorite browser.

Have you encountered similar problems? How did you solve it? Which of the solutions mentioned above helped you? Did you come up with a different one? Please feel free to join the discussion in the comments section below and share your thoughts/questions/ideas.
